Forces Armes Nigriennes, Niger (original) (raw)

The flag of the F.A.N. was quite difficult to find. The only high quality image depicting the flag was a photograph taken for a stock photo website. This depicted the reverse clearly, however text on the obverse shined through. The best copy of the obverse could be found on the website of the Gendarmerie Nationale, which showed the words FRATERNITE, TRAVAIL, PROGRES, which is the national motto of Niger. Despite this, there was still some illegible text on the top stripe of the flag. I discovered this by downloading the original image and increasing the contrast in Adobe Photoshop. This revealed two lines of text on the top stripe of the obverse. The top line contained a relatively long word beginning with REP, and the bottom line contained the word DU, and a relatively short word beginning with NI. From this information it can be inferred that the text reads REPUBLIQUE DU NIGER, as this is the most logical explanation of my findings. With this information, I can confidently describe the flag of the F.A.N. as follows:

A horizontal tricolour of orange, white, and green, with an orange circle in the centre of the white stripe. In each corner, a golden sun surrounded by two ears of corn of the same colour. On the obverse, the phrase REPUBLIQUE DU NIGER, split between two lines of text in the top stripe, the words FRATERNITE and TRAVAIL to the left and right of the circle, and the word PROGRES on the bottom stripe. On the reverse, the words FORCES ARMEES on the top stripe, and the word NIGERIENNES on the bottom stripe. Accents are not used. A golden fringe surrounds the entire flag.
